Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches by a given amount whilst maintaining the tree's natural shape as much as possible .

 

This is normally only carried out to reduce branch loading if a tree has become too large for the area it is in or due to weak branch unions/decay.
